An evolved classic
Danners Mountain Light II is a hiking boot with a very long heritage, going back to 1957. Before then, hikers pretty much used work boots or very expensive European mountain climbing boots.The Mountain Light II is constructed using what is often called the "stitchdown" method, otherwise known as Norwegian Welt. The upper leather flares out where it meets the midsole and the two parts are joined by stitching which is visible around the outside edge of the boot. This method has a couple of advantages: it makes the sole of the boot slightly wider than the uppers, which gives a broad base for stability. When the sole eventually wears out, it is easily replaced. Disadvantages are that boots constructed this way can be heavier than boots in which the soles are cemented on.Uppers are constructed of one piece of leather, with a vertical seam at the Achilles tendon, covered by a reinforcing heel counter. 13 years later
These were a gift for my husband. He had his last pair of Danner boots for 13 years, and wore them daily through harsh winters, hiking trips, all over Europe, had them resoled at least two times. Finally, this year, he was ready for a new pair. He insisted on getting exactly the same kind, and even waited several months after Christmas, for his size to come in. He is thrilled with his new pair, and hasn't even needed a breaking-in period. These are high quality, waterproof boots--built to last!

Great long trip hiking boot.
This review is for those who need a wider, medium duty hiking boot. I wear 9 4E in sneakers. At 9 2E, and with thick socks these Danner Mountain Light II boots are very comfortable. My experience with Goodyear welt and Vibram soled leather boots includes super stiff Vasque and Alico Summits. I am (or was) a heavy pack hiker needing excellent support only stiff boots like this can provide. The Vasques and Alicos are wonderful for heavy pack hiking in mountainous terrain. But in my old age, these Danner Mountain Lights are better since I can no longer carry a pack. The Danners are lighter. They are more flexible and they are not padded or insulated. The GoreTex lining is effective. During several hikes, my feet stayed reasonably cool. Leather quality is excellent. They come supplied with some odd but very comfortable hard plastic orthotics. I did not think these would work but they are great.As to stiffness, these boots cannot compare to the Vasques or Alicos...

THE boot
I bought my first pair of these in BIAP. I will never wear another boot as long as they let me wear this one. It is super durable, looks sharp, IS LIGHT (which means everything if you have to hump it more than 1 click in the hot sun), and it is within regulation. Eat that Sergeant Major. You too Top. If you really want the best boot experience, check out the "sof sole" heat molded insole, a trick I picked up just prior to Ranger school (yep, you can wear them there too, since they are not gel insoles). As to their durability in the other comment posted, if a boot is lasting over a year, it is durable. I wore mine for two, and it is time to replace it.

Worth EVERY penny!
I've worn these for the last three years, including AIT, drill weekends (National Guard), and an entire Afghanistan deployment. These boots are THE most comfortable boots I have ever worn and will never wear another brand again. I owe a lot of thanks to Danner, they've made my life in the military a lot easier. I have knee and back problems, especially since I've been back from over seas and these boots give me the support and comfort I need to drive on. I promise you, if the correct size of this boot is worn, this can be the greatest investment of your entire military career, and then some!

excellent boot
Wore these boots everyday for a year in Iraq and they are still going strong. The treads are a little worn but that's to be expected. They're extremely comfortable and lightweight. They're almost like wearing a pair of sneakers, only a heck of a lot more durable. Once you wear a pair of these you'll never wear another pair of standard issue boots again. Sure they are a little pricey but your feet will thank you. I would suggest buying these somewhere that you can try them on first because they run a little big in size. I normally wear a size 12, but had to get these in an 11.5. Currently these are the best boots i've ever worn, but i would love to try the Oakley boots just to compare.

Sometimes being Radical is a good thing
I have 43 years of hiking, backpacking and peak bagging experience. In recent years I migrated, like most people, from all-leather European-style mountain boots to lighter fabric/leather combination boots. They seemed to work well for a while but two years ago I started experiencing significant pain in my toes, instep and heel. I concluded that my lightweight boots from a well known outdoor supplier were a contributing factor, if not the root of the problem because they didn't provide sufficient torsional (side-to-side) rigidity.Danner's advertisement for the "Terra Force" boot support system convinced me to buy the Radical GTX two years ago.The first thing I liked about the Radicals was the roomy box toe area that eliminated occasional rubbing problems caused by my prior boots' smaller toe box. Best Everyday/Hiking Shoe Ever!
I am very active and have very flat feet & weak anckles. I need a very Supporting/Flexible/Well made shoe. This is the only shoe I have worn for the past 6 years (except for my tennis shoes @ the gym). Water proof, breathable and soft/tough leather.

Best boots-period.
I have been a police officer for a long time, most of my career as a canine handler. I found out a long time ago that you get what you pay for in foot wear, and not to skimp on good boots. Danners are the best I have found after trying out several other top brands. I have been wearing Danners at work for over 15 years now, and this is my first pair for off-duty wear. The quality is every bit as good as my duty boots and I look forward to years of wear from them. They are a bit stiff when you first get them so my recommendation is to break them in slowly; just use common sense. I did about two weeks of 2 mile walks with mine and they are feeling great. Brown Kiwi should keep them looking great.

Best boot on the market
I have owned a pair of these boots since 2003 and wear them every day on the job as a flight nurse / paramedic. I have put these boots through the ringer and they are just as comfortable today as the day I bought them. Seven years later they are still waterproof and I don't hesitate to step in water. While some might say these boots are a little pricey, I don't think $32.00 a year is to much to pay for a top quality pair of boots. The best part about these boots is the ability to have them re-soled or completely refurbished, which I have not had to do yet, but I won't hesitate to do when the time comes.

Very nice!
I don't wear a uniform for a living, never have, never will. Being an ornery sort I don't think I'd do well as a cop, questioning everything and not wanting to do the ruling class's dirty work for them for a mere pittance.But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night and I have to say these are great boots for anyone. I started wearing these after a roommate who was in AFROTC sold me on them. They're very nice boots regardless of being marketed as a LE/military boot, much different than a work boot and more like a hiking boot. In fact, I also own these in brown sold as the Danner Foothill, which is marketed as a hunting boot and is the exact same except it has speedlaces and comes in basic brown instead of JBT black. Danner builds boots. Not jacket's or hats or underwear... Just boots, and they do an exceptional job of it. Certainly Danner's are not for everyone, just like a differnt motorcycle helmet manufacturers different brands fit different people. Danner's are narrow by design, and do tend to run a bit on the flat side in the arch. But if they do fit your foot shape, you will never go back to anything else.Acadia's are worn by most of the people who are out there protecting you every day. Fire, police, and military personnel are the people who these boots, and in that task they meet all the requirements those professions demand. I've worn the Acadia since 1996 on my job as a professional firefighter/EMT and though I've tried a few other kinds of boots over the years; I always come back to the Acadia. Great Value
These boots are not cheap, but they are a terrific value. I have worn these for years with little signs of wear.They are also very comfortable. I put them on and they felt broken in. Your feet will thank you for dropping a couple extra bucks (get some decent wool socks while you are at it.)These cost more than some of those trendy hiking shoes sold in trendy outdoor stores, but not a lot more, but they worth every cent. You get what you pay for.

Danner makes one of the best boots in these United States. Pure American USA Made in Portland, Oregon.These boots are not only comfortable, they are versatile in that you can wear them in the office and the woods. Don't let the Nubuc leather freighten you away. Nubuc is tougher than the other leathers and water will run right off of it. The Goretex liner means waterproof boots and that will let your feet breathe but will not allow moisture/water to get in.These boots don't need expensive waterproofing cremes and sealers either. One only needs to brush the boots off with a cloth and spray the boots every so often with Heavy Duty Scotch Guard, or KIWI Heavey Duty water repellent, and let dry over night.Many have had their Danner boots' for over 20 years. They just keep getting them re-souled about every eight to ten years. Wonderful boots
I have been a huge fan of Danner boots since I was issued my first pair of Matterhorns in 1997 in the Army. I have always referred to Danner as the Cadillac of boots.A couple of years ago, I bought a pair of Danner Light II's and a pair of Danner Patrol boots. I wear these boots to work daily.I cannot recommend these boots enough. The Danner boot has a wide platform, stiff sole, and terribly comfortable upper. After a couple of months, these boots will feel like they were custom made for your feet.These boots are not cheap, but with footwear, you get what you pay for.
