A Great Anthology
Most people like poetry more than they are willing to admit, and this book will open anyone's heart to the simplicity and complexity of poetry's possibilties. I teach college literature courses and am always searching for approachable poems to share with my poetry-fearing students. This book has been the perfect collection to break down the stony walls that separate those who love poetry and those who are just plain afraid to. The varied representations range from Cesar Vallejo to Bob Dylan to Czeslaw Milosz. Edited by that eccentric Robert Bly(et al)with the cool hand gestures and multiple recitations style, section titles such as "Making a Hole in Denial" and The Naive Male" shouldn't scare anyone away. The selections and commentaries are terrific. The only flaw is the subtitle "Poems for Men" which appears only on the title page--which is a good thing since if I'd seen it before I bought the book, I probably would have laughed thinking I had...

Good Medicine for the Male Soul
If you loved Iron John, you should read this book. But if you either (1) didn't read Iron John, (2) tried to read but couldn't finish Iron John, or (3) hated Iron John, you should especially read this book. I have to say up front that I don't agree with, or perhaps understand, many aspects and details of the men's movement. I was one person who tried mightily to read and enjoy Iron John, but simply couldn't get all the way through it. Then I found this book, and I have been reading it since. This was 10 years ago. I am exaggerating of course, but only a little. This book is a constant in my reading habits. I refer to it again and again, and have recommended it (and purchased it) for more friends than any other book I know.Simply, this is a wonderful anthology of poetry, organized thematically, for men. Another good James Benn novel.
"Rag and Bone" is author James Benn's fifth novel in his Billy Boyle series. Boyle, a Boston cop drafted into the US army during WW2, is saved from front-line duty by his relationship to an American general, who pulls some strings in book #1 and places Billy on his staff as a sort-of "personal cop". The general - "Uncle Ike" to Billy - is, of course, Dwight Eisenhower.Ike is only one of the real-life characters Benn blends in with his fictional ones. Billy, from a family of smart Irish cops, finds himself involved in crimes from Ireland to north Africa. His "solve rate" is pretty good because he keeps returning, book after book. Benn's series writing is not always even. I've liked some books slightly better than others, but in this one, Benn turns in five-star writing.Billy's job in "Rag and Bone" is to solve a murder of a Russian diplomat in London in 1944. Another Winner from Jim Benn
After enjoying the first book in the series, "Billy Boyle," so much, I've been apprehensive each time a new one comes out, lest it not meet the high standards of the previous ones. Not to worry. Each one gets better as Benn becomes a more assured writer. The background, as always, is well researched and the plot lines interesting.

There are at least three good reasons to read Peter Manseau's latest book, Rag and Bone: A Journey Among the World's Holy Dead. The most quickly apparent reason is the way Manseau writes. Entertaining, educational lighter read
Exactly the book I hoped it would be, at exactly the right time. I was looking for a well-written, somewhat humorous travel memoir with a more literary bent. So much of what I've been reading lately has been so heavy, and I needed a short break from that. Manseau's book fit the bill perfectly.The subject of religious relics is probably covered in more depth elsewhere, in a nonfiction book that perhaps goes into more detail. But that's not the book I wanted to read. Manseau's less-structured romp through the world of relics, and light foray into what makes them important to some, was appealingly sweet and informative enough it satisifed my need to know just the surface facts. Indeed, at times his musings were more deep than others, and I enjoyed that as well. For me, it was just the right book for the point I'm at in my reading.

The usual Cormier blend of compassion and cruelty...
Reading Cormier's swan song is all the sadder for knowing it's his swan song. His time to be re-evaluated as a master of fiction, not just a master of young-adult fiction, is long overdue. In any event, the bulk of this one is a prolonged and bruising interrogation. A seven-year-old girl has been found murdered. Twelve-year-old Jason Dorrant is the prime suspect, though there's no 'physical evidence' to link him to the crime. Trent, a hotshot interrogator brought in to speed the case to closure, grills the boy. This being Cormier, you're pretty sure Jason is innocent, but only pretty sure. Hence the compassion and cruelty of Cormier's method -- sometimes when reading the latest Cormier book (including this one) you'd sort of get mad at him for creating such likable, sympathetic characters and then putting them into the meat grinder. But he made you care, so it was impossible to stay mad even if you hated what happened to the good people in his work. This is classic Cormier --...

Robert Cormier doesn't waste words. In his lifetime, he penned over 25 young adult novels...each one a gem in its own right.
